One my friends and very loyal clients stopped by my house with her new SLR and baby boy to pick up some tips on how to use an SLR! She was already armed with book knowledge and experience from her 3 kids, so it was a breeze and I think she’s gonna take off with that thing!
Here are some basic tips for anyone with an SLR.. or even not!
1. Turn off the flash!
I shudder anytime I see that flash pop up and the natural lighting is already so perfect! Just dont do it.
2. Venture off AUTO mode (aka the little green box).
If you’re just starting out and you have an SLR try A or Av mode. In this mode you select what aperture or f-stop you want to use and the camera will select a shutter speed to match. Make sure to crank that f-stop down to a smaller number for brighter image with lots of depth of field (aka a blurry background). THEN take notes on what the camera selected so you can shoot in manual!
3. Look for good light.
Windows = good. Sunset/Sunrise = good. Shade = good… Mid-day sun = bad. No windows = bad. fluorescent = terrible. I can’t stand to look at myself in fluorescent lighting.
4. Creative cropping
I am a frequent head in half chopper or little hands and toes grabber. Try to look deeper and tighter into the image.
5. Rapid Fire
This might seem like a no brainer, but take a TON of photos from every angle. You’re bound to get more keepers!
